Asthma is the chronic lung disease that causes severe irritation in the airways. The “attacks” of Asthma are normally triggered by factors of environment, as is case of inhaled allergens such as pollution or pollen and few other times due to allergies from food. During asthma attack, airways inside the lungs develop inflammation, constricting air flow thus resulting in coughing and wheezing, along with a constriction feeling in the chest.

Incidences of Asthma are considerably increasing, in present day’s stressful and modern urbanized living. Ayurveda, which is one of the ancient systems of medicine, views asthma as well as other diseases as the result of an individual going beyond harmonization with the universe. The disruptions could be emotional, physical and/or spiritual.

There is a versatile approach in Ayurveda to reach root cause of any problem and it aims in preventing the ailment rather than in treating it. Ayurvedic treatment for acute asthmatic attacks involves relieving distress of breathing. Ayurveda offers therapies which could reduce the symptoms or even help in eliminating, asthma over time. In Ayurveda, asthma could be correlated with the “SHWASA ROGA”.

Asthma, from the Ayurvedic perspective, is basically the Kapha dosha syndrome. Children with Asthma having predominantly Kapha dosha show symptoms of wheezing and cough with abundant white or clear phlegm. The lungs are full of water, and produce rattling or crackling sound. The attacks occur during early morning and in the evening.

Asthma due to predomination of Pitta dosha could involve wheezing and coughing with yellow phlegm. Further asthma attack symptoms include fever, irritability, sweating and necessitate cool air. These attacks come around during noon and midnight.

Children with Asthma suffering from Vata dosha show symptoms of wheezing and dry cough, dry skin, thirst, dry mouth, anxiety, constipation, and longing for warm drinks. The attacks occur mostly by dawn and dusk.
